The EZRA Project Chicago is a non-denominational 501c3 organization that encourages individuals through its programs of intergenerational recognition, education, and advocacy. Because The EZRA Project Chicago understands that
“where there is no vision, the people perish…” (Proverbs 29:18),
We strive to live out our core values of faith, Christian ministry, education, and empowerment in an ever changing landscape of human challenge and triumph.
Michael and Dr. Rosa Sailes made their careers as educators in the Chicago Public Schools. Michael Sailes spearheaded business and vocational education programs in the Chicago High Schools and was a leader in several national student programs. Dr. Rosa Sailes, an ordained minister, taught high school English and Language Arts before transitioning to full-time ministry as a writer and teacher. Over the years, their exemplary teaching netted them numerous awards including the prestigious Golden Apple Award. Their influence has impacted several generations of students. The Michael and Rosa Sailes Scholars program reflects their values and encourages education and community dedication.
Each year, The EZRA Project Chicago awards individuals who have served the Church community in specific areas of ministry for over 35 years. Several of the EZRA Project Chicago’s Torchbearer awards are named for individuals who have left a legacy of exemplary faith. Other awards are presented to individuals whose Christian service has either impacted the larger culture, provided humanitarian outreach, or made a difference in the community’s quest for justice and equity.
The word “Sankofa” is taken from an African symbol which means “to go back and fetch” your history in order to move forward. The Sankofa Memorial allows community members to honor the legacies of deceased loved ones who served as mentors and role models in their lives. The Sailes Legacy Scholars Program was established to provide an opportunity for those community histories to propel the next generation of scholars to academic excellence and service in the African American community.
Rooted in the Akan concept of “Sankofa,” which means “go back and fetch it,” the Sankofa Memorial stands as a powerful reminder to honor the past while forging one’s future. This memorial allows families to contribute to the Scholar Awards in the name of individuals whose resilience and achievements have shaped their lives. The Sankofa Memorial inspires both remembrance and progress, underscoring the importance of learning from our ancestors as we chart a path toward a more just and compassionate future.
